چکیده

Given an undirected graph representing of processors, and a source node containing a network a message that must be broadcast to all the nodes, find a scheme that accomplishes the broadcast in the minimum number of time steps. A t each time step, any processor that has received the message is allowed t o communicate the message to at most one of its neighbors in the network, i.e. can communicate via a telephone call to a neighbor. This has been termed the minimum broadcast time problem under the telephone model and is known to be NP-complete. The minimum broadcasl time an a graph is closely related to the poise of the graph. The poise of a tree i s defined t o be the quantity (maximum degree of any node in the tree + diameter of the tree). The poise of a graph is the minimum poise of any of its spanning trees. Computing the poise of a graph as shown to be NP-hard and an algorilhm for computing a spanning tree of approximately minimum poise is derived. This algorithm is then used to derive an O(&)approximation for the minimum broadcast time problem on an n-node graph. Our algorithm extends to many generalizations of the problem such as the multicast problem, a telephone model allowing conference calls, and t o the closely related minimum gossip time problem. *Most of this work was done while the author was at the De partment of Computer Science, University of California, Davis, and supported by NSF Grant CCR-91-03937. Girth, minimum degree, independence, and broadcast independence

An independent broadcast on a connected graph $G$is a function $f:V(G)to mathbb{N}_0$such that, for every vertex $x$ of $G$, the value $f(x)$ is at most the eccentricity of $x$ in $G$,and $f(x)>0$ implies that $f(y)=0$ for every vertex $y$ of $G$ within distance at most $f(x)$ from $x$.The broadcast independence number $alpha_b(G)$ of $G$is the largest weight $sumlimits_{xin V(G)}f(x)$of an ind...

Efficient Distributed Communication in Ad-Hoc Radio Networks

We present new distributed deterministic solutions to two communication problems in n-node ad-hoc radio networks: rumor gathering and multi-broadcast. In these problems, some or all nodes of the network initially contain input data called rumors, which have to be learned by other nodes. In rumor gathering, there are k rumors initially distributed arbitrarily among the nodes, and the goal is to ...

Cost-effective broadcast for fully decentralized peer-to-peer networks

Recently, there has been a growing interest in peer-to-peer networks, sparked by the popularity of file sharing applications such as Napster and Gnutella. A typical characteristic of a peer-to-peer system is that all the nodes are equal participants in the network. Gnutella is an example of a ‘pure’ peer-to-peer system, being fully distributed where all nodes are equal and no special nodes with...

A Rumor Spreading Model with Control Mechanism on Social Networks

In this paper, considering a control mechanism that uses an anti-rumor spread to combat a rumor spread, a novel susceptible-infected (SI) model is developed. By means of mean-field theory, the early stage propagation dynamics of the rumor and the anti-rumor on homogeneous networks and inhomogeneous networks are investigated, respectively. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that, i...

Rumor Spreading on Percolation Graphs

We study the relation between the performance of the randomized rumor spreading (push model) in a d-regular graph G and the performance of the same algorithm in the percolated graph Gp. We show that if the push model successfully broadcast the rumor within T rounds in the graph G then only (1 + ǫ)T rounds are needed to spread the rumor in the graph Gp when T = o (pd).
